Frequently Asked Questions

Food safety is a matter of utmost importance due to its direct impact on public health. Ensuring safe food practices is a collective responsibility shared by individuals, businesses, and the government. In India, this responsibility is spearheaded by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the principal regulatory body for maintaining food safety and quality. FSSAI plays a key role in ensuring that food consumed by the public meets safety standards. Given its significance in the Indian food industry, many individuals and businesses have questions about FSSAI’s operations, processes, and roles. A certified FSSAI consultant can offer expert guidance throughout the registration and compliance journey. Below are some of the most commonly asked questions.

The Quality Assurance/Lab Division is responsible for testing food products and collecting data for analysis. This data supports law enforcement, policymaking, public awareness, and standard development. Testing is carried out at FSSAI-approved labs, which may be government-owned or private, depending on the requirement.
FSSAI issues three types of licenses based on annual turnover:
  • Basic Registration: For businesses with turnover up to ₹12 lakhs.
  • State License: For turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crores.
  • Central License: For turnover above ₹20 crores or those operating in multiple states.
